Women's sandals: the quick guide

Summer sandals need to cope with hot days, long walks and the odd beach trip. Our range covers flat sandals, slides, wedges and heeled sandals, most on cushioned footbeds, plus lightweight Cloudsteppers styles.

Pick by your plans:

  • On your feet all day: a flat sandal with a contoured footbed and adjustable straps, or Cloudsteppers styles like the Arla and Mira.
  • Weddings and events: a heeled sandal like the Bridgit or Jaylan Dream.
  • Easy slip-on: a slide, or a wedge slide like the Diaz.

Sandals you can actually walk in

If you're walking a lot, go for a sandal with a strap around the back of the heel, adjustable buckles and a contoured footbed. Slides are easy to slip on but give less support, so keep them for shorter outings. For dressier sandals with a heel, see our heels and wedges.

Leather or synthetic?

Leather sandals soften and shape to your foot over the first few wears, but they don't like water. For the beach or pool, choose a synthetic or EVA sandal that's made to get wet.

Getting the fit right

Your toes shouldn't hang over the front and your heel should sit fully on the footbed. Leather straps can feel firm at first, so loosen the buckle a notch if they dig in, and a little leather conditioner helps them soften. Our shoe care range has leather conditioner to keep the straps soft.

Frequently asked questions

Are Clarks sandals good for walking?

Styles with a cushioned footbed, adjustable straps and a back strap are made for walking. Slides and dressier heeled sandals are better for shorter outings.

Do leather sandals need breaking in?

Usually a few wears. Leather straps soften as you wear them. If a strap digs in on day one, loosen the buckle a notch and use a little leather conditioner.

Can I wear leather sandals in water?

It's best not to. Water can stiffen and mark leather. For the beach or pool, choose a synthetic or EVA sandal made to get wet.

Are wedges more comfortable than heeled sandals?

For most people, yes. A wedge spreads your weight along the whole sole, so it feels more stable, especially on grass or uneven ground.

How do I clean sandal footbeds?

Wipe them with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, don't soak them, and let them air dry out of direct sun.

What width are Clarks sandals?

Most women's styles are D width, our standard women's fit, and adjustable straps help fine-tune the fit. Check each product page for the widths available.
