Men's loafers: the quick guide
A loafer slips on in seconds and works with everything from shorts to a suit, which is why so many men end up wearing one more than any other shoe. Which loafer for what?
- Office and smart casual: the Aldwin Step, a smart leather slip-on in black or mid tan.

Leather or suede?
Polished leather is the safer pick for the office and handles a bit of rain. Suede looks more relaxed and is great in summer with chinos or shorts, but give it a protector spray before you wear it.
Getting the fit right
With no laces, a loafer relies on its shape to stay on. It should feel snug across the top of your foot, and your heel shouldn't lift more than a little as you walk. Leather gives slightly over the first couple of weeks. Don't go up a full size to get more room, because a longer shoe will slip at the heel.
Loafer or lace-up?

Frequently asked questions
Should I wear loafers with socks or without?
Either. For the bare-ankle look, wear no-show loafer socks so the lining stays fresh and you avoid rubbing. With trousers at the office, normal dress socks are fine.
Are loafers OK for the office?
In most business-casual offices, yes. For strict corporate dress codes and interviews, a black leather lace-up is still the safer choice.
Do Clarks loafers fit wide feet?
G is our standard men's width, which is roomier than many brands. Check the product page for the widths available in each style, and don't size up in length to get extra width.
What colour loafer should I buy first?
Dark brown or tan is the most versatile, working with navy, grey, khaki and denim. Choose black if you mostly wear black or charcoal.
How do I break in new leather loafers?
Wear them around the house for an hour or so a day for the first week, and use a leather conditioner to help the upper soften. Avoid a long walk on day one.
