Women's heels and wedges: the quick guide
If you want heels you can actually wear all day, the shape of the heel matters more than the height. Block heels and wedges spread your weight more evenly than a stiletto, and our styles sit on cushioned footbeds. Most come in D width, our standard women's fit.
Pick by occasion:
- Office: a block-heel court of 3 to 6cm.
- Weddings and events: a mid-height block heel you can stand in for hours.
- Summer: a wedge or espadrille.
Heels that don't hurt by 3pm
Most of the pain from heels comes from your foot sliding forward and your toes taking the weight. A block heel up to about 5cm, a cushioned footbed and a shoe that holds your foot in place make the biggest difference. Wear new heels around the house for an evening or two before a big day.
Block heels or wedges?
Wedges are the most stable, because the whole sole touches the ground. That makes them a good choice for outdoor events on grass or uneven ground. Block heels look a little dressier and are easier for the office.
Rather skip the height?
Plenty of people swap to flats for long days. Our women's flats and loafers give you a polished look without a heel. If you like a heel in winter, there are heeled styles in our women's boots.
Getting the fit right
Our heels run true to size. If you're between sizes, go up half for comfort. Leather gives slightly across the front of your foot with wear. If your foot slides forward, a style with a strap or a snugger fit across the top will help.
Frequently asked questions
What heel height is comfortable all day?
For most people, a block heel up to about 5cm. Above 7cm, comfort drops quickly unless the heel is a wedge or platform.
Are wedges easier to walk in than heels?
Generally, yes. The whole sole is in contact with the ground, so wedges feel more stable, especially on grass or uneven surfaces.
How do I stop my feet sliding forward in heels?
Choose a style with a strap or a snug fit across the top of your foot, and avoid going up a size unless you need to. A gel cushion under the ball of your foot can also help.
Should I size up in heels?
Only if you're between sizes. Heels that are too big let your foot slide forward and your heel slip out, which makes them harder to walk in.
