Women's boots: the quick guide

Our women's boot range covers ankle boots, Chelsea boots, heeled boots, long boots and the original Desert Boot. Most styles come in D width, our standard women's fit, with a cushioned footbed. If you live somewhere with wet winters, leather is the easiest to look after.

Which boot for what?

  • Everyday with jeans: a flat leather ankle boot or the women's Desert Boot.
  • Work, dresses and skirts: a block-heel ankle boot.
  • Cold, wet days: leather rather than suede, or a long boot for warmth with skirts.

Ankle boots

Most people wear ankle boots more than any other boot, because they work under jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. Our women's ankle boots come flat or with a block heel, as pull-on Chelsea styles or with a zip, in leather and suede. If you want an adjustable fit, our lace-up boots let you tighten them around the ankle.

The women's Desert Boot

The women's Desert Boot is the same design Clarks has made since 1950: two eyelets, a suede upper and a natural crepe sole. It's a relaxed, casual boot that goes with almost anything. It runs slightly large, so go down half a size if you're between sizes.

What heel height can you wear all day?

For most people, a block heel up to about 5cm is comfortable for a full day. Above 7cm, comfort drops off quickly unless the heel is a wedge or platform. If you're walking a lot, a flat boot or a low 3 to 4cm block heel is the safest choice.

Long boots and calf fit

The calf is where long boots go wrong. Before you order, measure around the widest part of your calf and compare it with the shaft measurement on the product page. Leave a little room if you'll wear them with jeans or thick tights.

Leather or suede?

Leather is easier in wet weather: you can wipe it dry and give it a bit of leather cream. Suede looks softer but needs a protector spray before the first wear and a brush after it gets wet. Our shoe care range has leather conditioner for your leather pairs.

Frequently asked questions

Do Chelsea boots stretch?

A little. Leather gives slightly across the top of your foot, and the elastic sides soften with wear. Snug is fine, but if they're painful at the instep on day one, try another size or style.

How do I stop my heel slipping in ankle boots?

Try half a size down or a gel heel grip. Lace-up boots also let you tighten the fit around your ankle.

Will long boots fit my calves?

Measure around the widest part of your calf and compare it with the shaft measurement on the product page. Leave a little room if you'll wear jeans or thick tights underneath.

Leather or suede for winter?

Leather is easier in wet weather because you can wipe it dry. Suede needs a protector spray before you wear it and a brush once it's dry.

What heel height can I wear all day?

For most people, a block heel up to about 5cm. Flat boots or a low 3 to 4cm heel are best if you're walking a lot.

Do Clarks women's boots run true to size?

Most do, and D is our standard women's width. The Desert Boot runs slightly large, so go down half a size if you're between sizes.
