School shoes: the quick guide

Most parents want the same three things: shoes that fit properly, pass the uniform check and last the school year. Our school range goes from first school shoes through to senior styles teenagers will actually wear, in black leather and in a range of widths so you can fit narrow and wide feet properly.

You can also shop boys, girls, black school shoes or leather school shoes.

Why the fit matters so much

Kids wear school shoes for around seven hours a day, five days a week. Shoes that are too narrow or too big cause blisters, rubbing and kids who drag their feet, and they wear out faster too. That's why we make school shoes in a range of widths, not just lengths. If your child has always struggled with shoes that pinch or slip, a different width usually fixes it.

Are they worth it over cheaper school shoes?

It's the question every parent asks. Cheaper shoes usually come in one width and often have synthetic uppers that crack or split partway through the year. Leather uppers, sturdy soles and a proper width fitting mean one pair is far more likely to make it through the year. If your child is hard on shoes, look at styles with a toe bumper and a sole that wraps up the front.

Popular styles

Current favourites include the Logan, Legend, Research, Tracey, Skill, Daytona, Degree, Module, Spirit, Mentor and Recess. Each product page shows the widths and sizes available for that style.

Frequently asked questions

What width school shoe should my child wear?

Measure both feet in the afternoon, when they're largest, and fit to the bigger foot. If shoes have always pinched across the widest part of the foot, go up a width. If they slip at the heel, try a narrower width before going down a size.

How much growing room should I leave?

About a thumb's width (roughly 10mm) between the longest toe and the end of the shoe for primary-age kids. Check the fit every few months, because young feet grow quickly.

Will they meet my school's uniform policy?

Our black leather school shoes are designed for typical Australian uniform rules: black, enclosed toe and heel, and low-key branding. Policies vary, so check your school's rules on things like heel height and whether sport-style shoes are allowed.

Can my child wear orthotics in them?

Many styles have a removable footbed so an orthotic can go in its place. Check the product page, and bring the orthotic when trying shoes on, as it can change the size or width needed.

Velcro or laces?

Straps are best until a child can tie their own laces confidently, usually in the first years of primary school. Older kids and teenagers generally prefer laces.

How do I make school shoes last the year?

Wipe them with a damp cloth after muddy days, polish them every few weeks, and undo the laces or straps to take them off rather than kicking them off at the heel. Never put leather shoes in the washing machine.
